The Reticular Activating System

The Reticular Activating System is a mechanism in the brain which determines what we pay attention to.

In any moment, your brain is receiving millions of pieces of information. From the temperature of each area of your skin, the way your clothes feel, to the many unique sounds entering your ears.

But what if, suddenly, our hand brushed against a boiling-hot plate. Within a fraction of a second, we would be aware of it consciously.

The Reticular Activating System is like a filter that only lets through information it thinks is relevant.
Our conscious mind simply couldn't cope with every detail of what is going on around us.

But the RAS is not fixed - we give it instructions as to what to alert us to.


An Experiment

Pan your head around the room you are in slowly. Don't try to focus on anything in particular. Once you've done this....

Think of the color red, and then look round the room again. Notice how even the slightest tint of red sticks out. That's your Reticular Activating System doing its job.

When you set a goal, you are essentially telling your RAS to focus on anything that will help you achieve it.

Goal-oriented people are not "lucky" - they are looking at the same World everyone else is. They have just trained their mind to make opportunities stick out from the background.

So consider the opportunities that exist in the markets and your RAS - What are you doing DAILY to train your mind to react to price patterns?
